Credits and downloads, and why they run out separately

The short version

Credits make songs. They come out of your balance every time you generate, extend, cover or remaster something, and a plan tops them up on a schedule.

Downloads take songs out. They come out of a completely different allowance the moment you press Unlock & Download, and until September 2026 that allowance did not exist.

Nothing converts between the two. A full credit balance will not buy you a download, and unused downloads will not buy you a generation.

Why this catches people out

For most of Suno's life the only meter that mattered was credits. You made songs until you ran out, waited for the top-up, and made more. Getting the audio onto your own disk was free and unlimited, so nobody thought about it.

On 3 September 2026 that changed. Downloads became the scarce thing, and they are scarce in a way credits never were: a free account gets seven in the lifetime of the account, not seven a month. Pro gets twenty a month, Premier sixty. The full picture is on the limits page.

The result is a mismatch that did not used to be possible. You can generate all week and find that the four takes worth keeping are three more than you can take home.

What resets, and when

• Your billing date, not the first of the month. Everyone's reset lands on a different day, which is why "it resets next month" is bad advice
• The free account allowance does not reset at all. Seven is seven, permanently
• Bonus downloads sit on top of the plan allowance. They are separate from the twenty or sixty, and they are not promised to survive the reset. Spend those first

What costs nothing

Quite a lot, and it is worth knowing because it changes how you work when both meters are low:

• Playing your own catalogue, as often as you like
• Reading, searching and sorting your library
• Copying lyrics and style prompts back out
• Renaming songs and editing their details
• Archiving everything that is not the audio file itself

That last one is the reason a text backup is worth doing even in a month where you cannot download a single track.

Seeing both numbers at once

Suno shows each of them, but not in the same place and not while you are browsing. Suno Manager reads both from your own session and puts them at the top of the panel: downloads left, credits left, how the downloads break down between your plan allowance and any bonus, and the date it all renews. The numbers are your account's own, read live, and none of it leaves your browser.

Questions people ask

Are Suno credits and downloads the same thing?

No. Credits are spent when you generate a song. Downloads are spent when you unlock a finished song and save the file. They are counted separately and run out independently of each other.

Why do I have credits left but cannot download?

Because they are different allowances. Since 3 September 2026 Suno caps downloads per plan: seven in total on a free account, twenty a month on Pro, sixty a month on Premier. A full credit balance has no effect on that number.

When do Suno credits and downloads reset?

Monthly allowances reset on your own billing date rather than on the first of the month, so the date is different for everyone. Your renewal date is shown on Suno’s billing page.

Do bonus downloads carry over to next month?

Bonus and promotional downloads sit on top of your plan allowance and are not part of it. They are not guaranteed to survive the reset, so spend those first if you have them.

What can I do without spending either?

Playing your own songs, editing lyrics, renaming tracks, browsing and searching your library, and copying out lyrics or style prompts all cost nothing. Only generating costs credits, and only unlocking a file costs a download.
